Sample Curriculum Vitae Critique

Dear Catherine,

To prepare your curriculum vitae, I chose a "Traditional" format. The traditional format is the style most chosen by professionals and employs the Times New Roman font. The resulting document is elegant and uncluttered with plenty of white space.

I began your curriculum vitae by centering and bolding your name, increasing its font size until it stood out from the rest of the text.

I separated your contact information (phone number and email) placing one flush right and the other flush left so that an admissions director could readily locate that information.

In the body of your curriculum vitae, I began with a Qualifications section. In this brief paragraph I summarized your qualifications and skills in telecommunications and broadcasting policy research. I mentioned your Research Fellow of the Year Award and your teaching experience with California State College.

I next wrote of your professional activities as a task force member and your numerous publications. Ending this section is information about your language skills in English and Japanese. (A plus in today's international marketplace).

Because your curriculum vitae is going to a business school, I chose your Professional Experience for the next section, rewriting the information you provided about the SCDI to put into bullet points.

I then separated your teaching experience from your Professional Experience. This makes the data more accessible and understandable to an admissions director.

In the next section I compiled your Education and Honors, listing your graduate degree first, then your Bachelor's, and finally the awards you received, including your scholarships.

In the following pages, I made separate listings for your conferences, publications, task force activities, and papers, then added the appropriate subheadings. The material is now organized so that an admissions director can go to any area and find the data quickly and easily.

All decisions to modify and organize data were in keeping with the standards and guidelines of the Professional Association of Resume Writers (PARW). With your curriculum vitae, you now have a powerful tool that's well-organized and filled with pertinent data, while also being aesthetically pleasing.
