This free sample salary history attempts to tactfully sidestep an employer or recruiter request for same. It does so by trying to land an interview to first learn about the job, and then negotiate salary. If that is not what you want to do, see Salary History Samples to choose another. See also Salary Requirement Letters.

You may download, personalize and otherwise modify this free sample salary history letter or keep it handy as an example to write your own. It's an RTF file format, which is compatible with most word processors (such as Microsoft® Word) and safe to download.

But first, please read the Important notice below, which includes the download link.

Because of differences in the way that Web browsers and word processors display pages, the format of the sample salary history letter displayed below differs slightly from the download version created in a word processor.

If you copy and paste this sample salary history from your screen instead of downloading it, the format might not stay intact.

This sample salary history letter is in a full-block style, business-letter format. But when emailing it, it doesn't necessarily need to be quite as formally formatted.

For example, you could delete the letterhead, date and recipient's address if you want, because an email will automatically include informal equivalents. It's a good idea to keep at least the salutation (Dear...) and complimentary close (Sincerely...), but you can change them to your preference.

Dear [Recipient's name]:

This letter is in reply to your request for my salary history.

In lieu of providing my salary history at this time, may I first schedule an interview to learn more about the job? I'd be happy to discuss my salary toward the end of the interview. It is negotiable, depending on job duties and benefits.

Thanks for contacting me. I hope to hear from you soon regarding an interview. Meanwhile, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. The best way to reach me is through my mobile phone, by dialing [area code, number].

Sincerely,
