slightly from the download version created in a word processor.
If you copy and paste this recommendation letter template from your screen instead
of downloading it, the format might not stay intact.

Dear [Recipient's Name]:
[If you don't feel good about writing a recommendation letter, then don't.
A poorly-written, wishy-washy or fabricated recommendation letter can do
more harm than good. Start by identifying the type and duration of the
relationship you've had with the employee for whom you're writing this
letter.]
[For the next paragraph or two, picture the employee in his or her job
role. Then emphasize positive traits while focusing on work ethic, accomplishments,
skills and significant contributions. Use at least one specific example.
Keep it short and to the point.]
[If you draw a blank, ask the employee to refresh your memory. If you
have access to the employee's merit reviews, refer to them for hints. If
you're sorry to see this employee leave, then say you are and why. But,
of course, keep the why to business reasons.]
[Avoid vague and powerless words such as nice, good, fine, fair and reasonable.
Instead, use persuasive words such as excellent, superior, above average,
instrumental, creative, innovative, efficient, dependable, articulate,
meticulous, stellar, self-starter and confident.]
[Wrap it up with a recommendation to hire the employee. Close by offering
to provide more information. Provide a phone number at which you're easily
reachable, even if it's already in the letterhead.]
Sincerely,
